I love my job, I love Europe and I love Korea. This was the slogan I always used when I was running the European Chamber of Commerce in Korea from 2013 to 2023. The chamber is a business interest group but I always loved to be more green, to advocate for a more sustainable lifestyle. It was an honour when I could receive His Excellency Ban Ki-moon, the eight Secretary-General of the United Nations on September 17, 2019 for a meeting followed by a speech in front of European business representatives. I still remember very well his clear statement about the necessity of sticking to the sustainable development goals as: “There is no plan B as there is no planet B”.

During the opening ceremony in front of the Seongbuk Global Village Center. Seo Chan-gyo, the mayor of Seongbu-gu, presented me with a certificate and appointed me head of the newly established Seongbuk Global Village Center, a cultural center for foreign residents in Seongbuk-dong. At the same time, I was appointed honorary mayor of Seongbuk-dong, a municipal office first awarded to a foreigner in Korea. This appointment made me feel incredibly honored and proud, and it opened a door for me, as a German, into the world of Korean local politics.

독일에서 화폐가 1999년까지 마르크( DM )을 사용하다가 2000. 01.01부로 유로( EURO )로 바뀌었습니다. 이 해에 공부를 마치고 귀국하시는 선배님 송별회를 학교 근처 주점 ( Kneipe )에서 서로 전공은 달랐지만 학교에서 자주 만나면서 친해진 동료, 선후배들과 함께 했습니다.

로마 가톨릭 교회의 한 단체인 '오푸스 데이( Opus Dei )'에서 운영하는 학생 남자기숙사 슈바이트 (Schweidt studentenheim) 에서 1996.12.25 기숙사 안에 있는 소성당( Kapelle )에서 성탄미사 후에 기숙사 거실( Wohnzimmer )에서 찍은 사진 입니다. 앞줄 맨 왼쪽 흰색 남방을 입은 사람은 일본에서 온 화가였고, 저는 앞줄 왼쪽에서 세 번째 베이지색 양복(상의)을 입었습니다. 학생들은 러시아, 폴란드, 스페인, 멕시코 등 여러 나라에서 왔었습니다. 1993년 독일 쾰른으로 가서 쾰른대 부설 어학과정을 거쳐 쾰른대에서 경영학을 공부하고 2004년 귀국했습니다. 독일에 도착하여 독일어을 배우며, 빨리 익숙해지고자 4년 몇 개월을 이곳 기숙사에서 살았습니다. 이곳에서는 많은 한국 학생들이 짧게, 또는 길게 살았었습니다.
